Mu (無) – The Great Void

Hand-brushed by Megumi Kitano

The Concept

Mu (無) is a cornerstone of Zen thought. It is often translated as "nothingness" or "the void," yet it suggests a state of infinite potential rather than an absence. It is the quiet space between breaths; the mind free from ego and dualism. To display Mu is to invite a sense of clarity and stillness into one's surroundings.

The Work

This is an original work, created in a single moment of meditative focus.

  • The Practice: Brushed by Megumi Kitano, Shihan (Master Calligrapher). The title of Shihan is a quiet acknowledgement of a life dedicated to the study of the brush—a commitment to carrying forward the traditions of Shodo with sincerity and care.

  • The Seal: Each piece is marked with the artist’s personal seal (Hanko), serving as a humble signature of authenticity and lineage.

The Materials

In Shodo, the materials are as much a part of the art as the ink itself. This piece is crafted using:

  • Paper: Awagami Hakuho (220gsm). A substantial, textured Japanese washi that honors the tactile nature of traditional art.

  • Ink: Kuretake "Ten-i Muho." This ink is named for a "seamless divine robe"—beauty that is natural, unforced, and without pretense.
